BFA show, Artist Statement

I will be also featuring shock and awe as an installation in the upcoming BFA two exhibit to be held April 28th in the UCF art gallery. We are asked to write an artists statement to accompany our work, so here it is:

"Photography is my medium of choice because of its simultaneous ability to capture and manipulate reality. I consider myself a concerned photographer. My work is a product of the social, political and personal.

This series shock and awe stemmed from turmoil in my own life but allows the viewer to reflect and question methods of power, dominance and control as it relates to their own experiences."

Travel and Publications

Isabelle and I have decided we are going to make the trip up to Annmarie Garden for the Re.action show opening. Also on exhibit will be the Olga Hirshhorn Recollects, on loan from the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. This collection will include works by Picasso, Matisse, and Miro. The combination of these exhibitions will celebrate the opening of the new arts building, so it should be a really great experience. Isabelle and I are in the process of printing, mounting, and sending out our work while also dealing with the pressure of finals at UCF, we just bought our plane tickets to Maryland and are looking forward to the experience as a short, yet sweet, vacation.

Not long ago I entered some works from my series this is what a feminist looks like, sometimes referred to simply as the feminist series, to be featured in the student-produced womens studies program webzine The Gender Gazette , and was accepted. The zine features poetry, non-fiction and fiction writing, graphic novels and visual art all encompassing gender related topics.

I have been on a hiatus from the feminist series for quite some time now, but plan to continue working on it in my masters and hopefully the rest of my life. I will update more on the series as it progresses.

Exhibitions UPDATE!

I have been officially accepted into the Re.action exhibit to be held at Annmarie Garden in Solomons, MD. Annmarie Gardens is affiliated with the Smithsonian!
The concept of the exhibit is movement in art, two and three dimensional, kinetic and illusionary.

My friend, the photographer Isabelle Ribiero was also accepted!
We are both very excited, and are currently searching for places to stay for the opening (A black tie affair!)

I will give more details as they arise!

artists to look at

While surfing the web and came across the Australian Center for Photography, I am particularly interested in their past exhibit Girl Parade. Some of the artists who participated in the exhibit that I loved were Anoush Abrar & Aimée Hoving and Tomoko Sawada.

Unrelated to the girl parade exhibit, Lauren Greenfield is my absolute favorite photographer/artist at the moment.

Tatame

I love love love Tatame. It is a little drop of culture amongst the corporate haven of Orlando.
The show is a success, even if there were a few kinks.
I hope more opportunities like this arise, I had a really wonderful time and was utterly surprised with the amount of people who came to support me and see the work. If I could ask for anything more with the show, it would be that the photos could be viewed closer because the details are really important. If you get a craving for some excellent saki or tea head over to Tatame and check out my work as well.

A few photos from the opening:
